The Studio Loft touches the Force

“So, will you be doing any bump shots?”

“No, but I know you will. You and Yi Lin are so into photography I’m not surprised!”

I was chatting with my friend Celine a couple of months back, a hot babe who still looks hot despite being 7 months pregnant (she’s due somewhere around National Day).

“Yeah.” I replied. “We’ll be doing bump shots. Yi Lin’s trawling Facebook pages and Google to find a studio that we like.”

Fast forward a couple of weeks, and we have already decided on having our shoot done by The Studio Loft. Looking at the gallery, we felt that there were two characteristics of the shots that were very important to us:

  • Fresh ideas on how to immortalise and celebrate the pregnant body with no aversion to nudity
  • The ability to incorporate our own ideas into the shoot

And just like the way we chose our flat, just like the way we chose our car, just like the way we chose each other, once we saw the images captured by The Studio Loft, we knew we found the perfect studio for our needs.

Yi Lin has already posted an entry on our shoot, which you should really read first, before going any further in this blog post. Go on, go ahead. I’ll wait.

In Yi Lin’s, she showed the various sets of photos that we took. We started off with nude (well, topless) shots, then we covered her with a sheer piece of cloth. Next, we had our black tops and jeans on, followed by white tops and jeans. Just like my over-achieving wife to blog with 4 sets of photos and leave 1 for me to talk about. *grumble*

But yeah, the last set was really our way of incorporating our own ideas into the shoot.

Stop! In the name of love...

A few years back, I found that the Star Wars universe extended way beyond what we saw in 6 movies. Since then, I’ve been immersing myself in the Force, following the adventures of Jedi Masters and Knights in a galaxy far, far away. The wife, being the exceptional woman that she is, suggested to me that we incorporate my love for Star Wars into the shoot.

Well… the shoot is really not about me, but our other loves are diving and blading. It wouldn’t be nice to do a shoot where I was a diver and my wife was the whale (not that she can still fit into a wetsuit), and I really didn’t want to risk getting her in a pair of roller blades. So, with great external reluctance and internal glee, I agreed to the Star Wars theme.

We borrowed a Jedi robe from a fellow Star Wars fanatic. But what could Yi Lin wear that would be in theme, and yet show off her lovely bump? Well, this was not a difficult decision to make, really. Ladies and gentlebeings, I present to you… SLAVE PRINCESS YI LIN!!!

The Princess has gotten some nasty eating habits from Jabba the Hutt!

Great costume, isn’t it? We got this from local cosplay  supplier Movie Mania thanks to a lead given by the above-mentioned fellow Star Wars fanatic. Truth be told, this costume was super-skimpy, but hey, Yi Lin was already doing nude shots with The Studio Loft, right? Besides, I’m not the one who has to be naked…

The Force is strong in the little one

One thing I should highlight though. If you are bringing in costumes or want to do some sort of themed shoot, you need to work out the type of poses that will work for you. Our photographer, Maryann asked us to get into some typical Star Wars poses and my mind just froze. It couldn’t handle the paradox – the only Jedi that Princess Leia knew was Luke Skywalker, who was also her brother. This “Princess Leia” in the studio was pregnant with the child of the “Jedi” in the studio…

No running around with sharp objects, but lightsabers are alright

Where was I? Oh, I really, really love how Maryann has captured everything so beautifully. The lighting was perfectly done, giving us nice natural skin tones without any harshness. She was also a pro at catching all the right expressions during the shoot. I looked through the entire collection of shots she took. Pretty much every shot could be used. Some needed more touching up than others, but there were no BAD shots.

That being said, photography can sometimes be brutal. Blemishes like scars and pimples can be seen. In the first photo above, I had a pimple right above the mid-point of my upper lip. In the third, you can see a little scar on Yi Lin’s thigh. In the one right above, you can see the corner where the white backdrop was slightly out of place. Well, no worries!

The basic package includes touch-ups before they print the 6 pictures for you. Scars and pimples disappear like magic! Alternatively, at a very affordable $250 extra, you can purchase photos from the entire shoot in soft copy. Hi resolution images, not crappy little thumbnails, mind you. These would be unedited, but most people would know how to use Photoshop, GIMP, iPhoto, or any other photo-editing software, right?

The Pimpleless (and peerless) Jedi

No more battle scars!

Here, try doing some of your own cropping!

Easy peasy!

Okay, enough of letting you see the same pictures over and over. Here are a few more shots that I really liked! I’m deliberately making them smaller though, so you don’t have to scroll too much. 🙂

And that's why she has such smooth hairless legs

War's over! Time to chillax!

Lethal woman

月亮代表我的心。。。 but that's no moon! It's a Death Star!

Postscript: We had so much fun with our photo-shoot that we realised we forgot to bring a very important companion until after the fact! Here’s a make-up shot with our trusty R2-D2. Isn’t it cute how our droid is holding a milk bottle? 🙂

Postscript 2: The Studio Loft is highly, highly recommended. Do check out their website and Facebook page for more pictures!

Thanks Holly!

Hey Tracy, I agree that Maryann’s work is top-notch! And don’t worry, I dun think Yi Lin minds people seeing me topless.

I really love what you guys have done, and Maryann’s work is top-notch. Probably would’ve asked to see all the pics at some point, but seeing them publicly on your blog like that. Aiyoh! *blush* I must be a little prude…
