Last week, while chatting with Tim, I was suddenly struck by how much Cristan has grown! Omigosh he’s THREE! How did time fly by so quickly???
Almost immediately, I once again felt a deep sense of joy and thankfulness for being able to be a stay-at-home mom (SAHM) for the last 2.5 years. Career can always be pursued later on, but our little ones will not stay little for long. I’m proud to have chosen this path, even if its just for a couple of years, and although we’ve had to make much sacrifices in terms of disposable income, its all been worth it!
Each day as a SAHM may seem boring and tiresome, with mundane chores to do and tantrums to endure. But life has a way of surreptitiously sweeping you along in its never-ebbing flow, and if we do not make conscious effort to appreciate each moment, it will be lost and oftentimes, not even remembered. So this post is one of marvelling at how much Cristan has grown and developed in these three short years! *proud momma beam*
Let’s begin with a quick trip down memory lane in pictures, just for the fun of it!
Beyond the physical growth, I feel as if Cristan has crossed a threshold of sorts, and is growing up from his baby-ish ways to become a full-fledged big boy!
And here are three reasons why I’m delighted that Cristan is the magical age of three:
1. He can talk! ALOT!
It’s funny how I can’t actually pinpoint when it happened (see, that’s why its important to blog about such things, because memories are too fleeting!) but I really love the fact that Cristan is now able to hold proper conversations with me. During car rides, we talk about fun outings we’ve had (invariably leading him to say “I want to go again”), what he did in school, and other random topics. He’s finally become a little person, able to articulate his thoughts and feelings. When I’m upset with him, he can tell me “Don’t shout at me, mommy”, and add “I want to make you happy.” This little charmer sure knows how to defuse the tension, and make me want to cuddle him instead of staying mad!
His diction has improved by leaps and bounds from the time he was mangling most words, but there are still some words that Cristan mispronounces, and Tim and I are constantly amused by them! Such as “slipper-ly” instead of “slippery”; “come-isu” for “come with you”; “lellow” for “yellow”; “bideo” for “video” and “shark” when he means “sharp”. I’m gonna miss these cute little blunders when he grows up!
2. He can do things for himself! And by himself!
Words cannot adequately express how ridiculously chuffed I am that Cristan is now old enough to independently do things, such as wearing/ removing his own clothing and shoes, washing his hands, and (sometimes, when he’s in the mood) self-feeding. Just last week, he floored me when he ran up to me in the living room and told me that he had just done a pee-pee in the toilet! All by himself! I was so proud!
I’m also greatly relieved that Cristan is now able to entertain himself for good stretches of time, rummaging through his toy boxes and playing happily on his own. I still recall the time, as an infant, when he absolutely refused to be left alone, making it near-impossible for me to do anything around the house! So glad those days are behind us!
3. He’s a good big brother
While its still early days, it sure warms the cockles of my heart to see the growing love and affection Cristan has for Caris. Even though Caris can’t really play together with him yet, she does her best to respond – with excited kicks, smiles and coos every time her kor kor interacts with her.
There have been times when Caris would start crying or fussing when I’m busy in the kitchen, and Cristan would happily oblige if I asked him to help me rock her on the rocker and sing her a song. Even more amazingly, Caris would stop crying and start smiling! Pure magic!
Naturally affectionate, Cristan would insist on saying hello to Caris every morning, as well as when he gets home from school. He would also give her random hugs and kisses now and then. Such a sweet kor kor!
There’s nothing quite like a pair of loving siblings to make a momma’s heart sing.
Ah yes, these are magical times indeed! 🙂
