Of Candles and Cupcakes
I can hardly believe it, my little munchkin is now two years old!
We celebrated his “Terrific Twos” over three separate occasions: with his playschool class; on the actual birthday with a fun outing to the Art Garden at Singapore Art Museum; and finally, with a small, cosy party last Saturday with family and our group of close friends.
I admire the super-moms out there who throw fantastic kiddy parties with awesome activities, gorgeous themed decorations, and thoughtfully put-together goodie bags. Kudos to them for putting in tremendous effort to plan a big ‘do for their little ones. As for me,Β I always try to get away with the simplest and most minimal. Β Besides, at this age, Cristan is still quite clueless, so that works…for now!
Anyway, here are some pictures of the celebrations. I’m glad that Cristan actually smiled in some of these! Hooray!
Day Before Birthday: At Cristan’s Playschool
The playschool that Cristan attends allows parents to do a mini-birthday celebration in the school during morning tea. By the way, in case you’re wondering, I did not bake these cupcakes. (I say, leave it to the experts!) Instead, I ordered them from a friend who recently started a home business,Β Angel Cupcakes. Great stuff! She even personalised the cupcakes with a marshmallow C on top of each one – too cute!

A simple celebration during morning tea – check out the little kiddo reaching out for a cupcake while we posed for a photo!
Cristan was crying for most of the “Happy Birthday” song, but paused long enough to blow out his candle! And lick off all the chocolate icing on his cupcake.
Actual Birthday: Pontang School for Outing
The next day, we let Cristan skip school and brought him to the Art Garden, 8Q @ SAM. This has got to be the most fantastic children’s art exhibition ever, and what’s more, admission is free! Cristan totally enjoyed himself, despite being a little sick and cranky.
His favourite exhibit was the Incredibly Magical Expanding Room, where colourful graphics projected on the walls would change in response to him shouting into a microphone. (Unfortunately it was too dark to take a proper photo of it, but he sure had fun!)
Weekend: The Birthday Party
We decided to hold a small birthday party for Cristan at a kid-friendly cafe, and they did up all the decorations for us, which meant it was totally fuss-free for me!
The main reason we chose this venue was because of their well-equipped play area for the little ones, allowing the grown-ups to catch up and have a leisurely breakfast in peace!
Yes, this lazy mommy was so slack, she decided to have a cupcake tower yet again, instead of a proper birthday cake, to avoid the hassle of cutting and serving the cake!
I love this picture of Cristan blowing out his candle, especially the facial expressions of the rest of the guests!
Cristan had tons of fun, and was overjoyed at receiving a big-boy bicycle as a present! Thank you aunties and uncles for this lovely gift!
Time really flies. How did my itty bitty baby boy grow into this active, playful toddler in the blink of an eye? Once again, I am reminded to treasure the everyday moments with him, as these precious years are going by way too soon!

Hi Isabelle,
I’m so sorry to inform you that this cafe has already closed down. It used to be called Treehouse Cafe, located at The Grandstand.
It’s really a shame because it was such a nice, kid-friendly cafe! My kids and I loved it!
Anyway, thanks for reading the blog and for dropping a line! Take care!
