As a friend of mine remarked over Whatsapp yesterday, I’ve become quite famous recently.
It’s all been rather fortuitous, really, and probably because I’m generally agreeable when people ask me if I can do interviews, etc. But in a span of 10 days, I had appeared on TV, Yahoo! news, the newspapers, and even radio! That’s quite an achievement for a humble SAHM, won’t you say?
It all started 2 weeks ago, when Prince William and Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge, visited our tiny little island in the sun. I was really excited and wanted to catch a glimpse of this glamorous royal couple in person. So together with a few friends, we braved the afternoon heat and humidity to say hello to the Duke and Duchess.
We reached Strathmore Green about an hour before William and Kate were scheduled to arrive, and there was already a crowd patiently waiting UNDER THE HOT SUN! As I had brought Cristan along (thinking that he would have a chance of getting a royal kiss), there was absolutely no way we would have joined them, so we decided to wait in the relatively cool shade of the void deck instead.
Turns out this was our ticket to fame, as reporters from various media channels thought exactly the same way (void deck good…hot sun bad…) while looking around for people to interview. And before I knew it, I was doing a TV interview in my horrendous Mandarin for Channel 8 news, followed by another interview for Yahoo! (thankfully in English this time).
I didn’t manage to catch the Mandarin news, but here’s the Yahoo! clip my friend so kindly shared with me over Facebook. (Cristan and I appear around 1 min 40s into the segment.)
Needless to say, we were so proud of our little munchkin on his first-ever media appearance!
A week later, my picture appeared on TODAY newspaper, in an article about flexible working arrangements. I had agreed to the interview as the journalist wanted to feature FlexiWerkz (where I’d recently become an editor), an online resource portal for people seeking work-life balance and flexi-work. However, even though I had done an entire telephone interview with the reporter, I was not quoted in the article at all. Despite that, they still decided to use my photo!
Two days after that, I was on Gold 90.5FM, being interviewed on the Gold Breakfast Show by Brian Richmond and Gurmit Singh about my experience as a parent, and how daddies nowadays are more hands-on in childcare and household chores. It was part of a publicity campaign leading up to Maybe Baby’s roadshow next weekend at Suntec City Mall. (By the way, do come and support us!)
To be honest, I had a few butterflies fluttering around the belly as it was my first-ever live radio interview. But the DJs were really warm, friendly, and funny, such that by the time we were on air, we were chatting like old buddies!
It was also cool to be able to witness how DJs operate “behind-the-scenes”, to bring us our daily radio shows. Just check out the intense look on Mark Richmond’s face! He was concentrating hard on making sure everything was rolling along fine, and didn’t join us in the banter.
And there you have it! 3 media exposures in 10 days, without the help of a publicist!
So…endorsement deals, anyone? 😉
