"After all, one does not need to break the bank to keep the whole family entertained!"
Edwin and I first met back in 1998, when we were both in the same junior college. Now, over 20 years on, we are the proud parents of three kids: Yiting (10), Haoyi (8) and Yizhen (6).
Many couples may feel that having three children is financially impossible in this day and age. However, for us, it’s all about living within our means, especially since Edwin is the sole breadwinner.
For instance, overseas trips are limited to once a year, and dining out at restaurants is reserved for special occasions. Instead, we often visit hawker centres, which expose the kids to local culture and enable them to meet people from all segments of society.
Raising a big family under one roof, it’s important for us to build strong family bonds. We do so by making it a point to have fun family outings and activities together on weekends, such as going on nature walks.
We usually explore the different gardens and parks Singapore has to offer, such as MacRitchie Reservoir and Bukit Timah Hill. We enjoy going on guided tours by NParks and other environmental conservation organisations, which are all free of charge. Places we have been to include Chek Jawa Boardwalk, Henderson Waves and Pasir Ris Mangrove Boardwalk Trail, to name a few.
Plus, we keep a lookout for other free events and activities, such as the annual Singapore Heritage Festival. After all, one does not need to break the bank to keep the whole family entertained!
Edwin and I also often volunteer at Yiting and Haoyi’s school during events like Racial Harmony Day and Children’s Day. Through it all, we’re happy to share that we’re very close as a family.
Some couples think that having more children results in their love and affection being “split”, but we disagree.
While time spent with each child will certainly have to be divided, we try to give our kids equal attention overall. We sometimes arrange to bring each child on solo outings so that all of our attention will be focused on him or her for that period of time.
Of course, more hugs and kisses for everyone at the end of the day always works magic!
