What is a fertility health check? 

It is an assessment of a couple’s fertility – to identify areas that may affect their chances of a natural pregnancy. For women, it includes an ultrasound scan and hormone blood test. For men, it will include a semen analysis. In some couples, specialised scans and additional tests may be required.

 

Why go for a fertility health check? 

It is to help identify contributing factors and eliminate any conditions that could prevent or delay a healthy pregnancy. Some reasons include: mild symptoms such as menstrual cramps, which are often dismissed as “normal”, and low sperm count and quality (which cannot be detected without lab tests).

 

How long will a fertility health check ‘last’? 

There is no official ‘validity period’ as fertility is affected by many factors, such as age, stress, health, etc. which may occur at any time.

If there are no significant changes to the couple’s health profile, and where the fertility check shows normal findings, then a couple (under 35 years old) may try for baby naturally for the next one to two years.

 

What affects fertility?

There are many factors that contributes to fertility heath or lack thereof, some examples are:

  • Age: lower fertility rate for women above 30 and men above 35
  • Physical health: diet and exercise, weight, presence of medical conditions
  • Stress and lack of work-life balance

Is my sperm healthy?

Up to 90 per cent of sperm produced is deformed, which is totally normal! But, men who have less than four percent of normal sperm in their semen sample may experience difficulty in conceiving naturally. One way to know is to go for a semen analysis to check the quality and quantity of your sperm with a gynaecologist / at a fertility clinic.

When is my fertile window? 

The optimal window for women to conceive is between the ages of 22 and 26. In a regular 28 day cycle, ovulation usually takes place about two weeks before your next menstruation.

What foods boost fertility?

Lacking in some of these key nutrients in our bodies can impact fertility:

For men and women

  • Zinc: Shellfish, meat, eggs and dairy produce, pulses, nuts and wholemeal grain
  • Vitamin E: Green leafy vegetables such as spinach as we ll as nuts, almonds and olive oil
  • Vitamin C: Oranges, papayas, mangoes, lemons, bean sprouts, broccoli and green peppers

For women: 

  • Essential fatty acids (e.g. Omega-3, 6 and 9): Oily fish like salmon, borage oil, fish oil and flax oil

Can we conceive again?

Secondary Infertility can happen to any couple who previously had a successful pregnancy. It happens for many reasons, some medical related ones are endometriosis, PCOS, quality and quantity of sperm while other reasons include advanced age, increased body weight and infrequent sexual intercourse.

What are my chances of conceiving?

Here are some facts about male and female fertility:

For males

  • Fertility decreases in men after 35 years of age as sperm quantity and quality tend to decline with age.
  • Wearing boxer shorts will keep temperatures cooler for better sperm production
  • Sperm takes three months to develop from cell to sperm, so anything that damages it along this timeline will decrease semen quality.

For females

When should we seek help? 

Couples are advised to seek help if they do not conceive after one year of regular intercourse without the use of contraceptives and after six months for couples who are above 35 years of age.

It is also never too early for couples to go for a fertility health check if they are newlyweds and/or are planning for children.
